Here are the two winning entries from the design competition – we loved both of them for their great ideas on use of the available space, structure of the buildings reflecting the research process, and the “outside the box” approach to what buildings mean in an environment where you can breathe under water and aren’t stuck to the ground! In the next couple of weeks we’ll be finalising a design that draws on ideas from both these entries, and we’ll put that design up here.
Very well done to Matt Hedges, Angela Jacobs, Lydia Niven, Steve Watson, Carol Darling, Sarah Elliot, Sarah Howard and Melanie Riley.

Here is the basic design brief for the SL design project, in the form of a .pdf triple-fold flyer, together with two .pdf pages with more detail on the site in SL and the kinds of prizes you could win. The competition is open to all first year students registering in September 2007 in the Faculty of Environment and Technology at UWE.

Hello and welcome to the RO blog, where we’ll be updating on the progress of the RO2 initiative and really welcome ideas, discussion and feedback on the RO.
Now that we have our land in Second Life (SL), we will really be getting going on the Web 2.0 aspects of the RO. We’re planning a design competition for some of our 1st year students in September 2007, and then will be building the SL RO building – I say building, but it could be something pretty unusual as you can ignore gravity if you want to, and fly and teleport. No need for buildings to be stuck to the ground, or each other! We plan to enable meetings and symposia for research students, have a wall where you can write your thoughts and lots of other good stuff. But, the best ideas come from lots of involvement from users, so please don’t be shy about joining in on this blog, or contacting us directly (you can find our contact details on the About link above).

RO land in Second Life – early days! We gained our land after applying to the Education UK SL land grant project. To see the aims and objectives of our project, you can download our application (see link below).
