Hi Anne, Thanks and great to meet you all too. I really appreciate the interest and support from IOSH - I'd be happy to give anyone a guided tour around the island and simulator.

It was great to hear about the simulator and have someone share their experience of Second Life. Thanks for coming to Leicester Liz! If I can convince our IT team to let us access SL I'll fly over to your island for a proper look around.

Thanks for making contact. We're concentrating more and more on the role of simulations of real world events to assist students to make the link (bridge?!) between theory and practice. As you'll see on the tour with Mattie Edwards from Citrus Virtual tomorrow, we now have 2 simulations about to be piloted - one in accident causation and risk, which is my academic area, and one in social work, particularly working with the elderly in care homes. We are also beginning a project with some colleagues in Languages to enable the students to practice immersion in Spanish before they go out on a year's placement in Spain. And, our health and social care colleagues are just about to buy another sim adjacent to this one to start work on interdisciplinary working in the health care sector - simulations of hospital admissions, multi-disciplinary care (A&E, radiography, theatre nursing, ward nursing etc). So, loads of interest developing and we'll begin using SL in anger with students on real courses next academic year (gulp!). Must admit to being quite nervous about it, as it's a whole new way of teaching that we'll be supporting in the E-learning Development Unit - any tips or tricks gratefully received!

Sadly, our plans re statistics have come to a halt, following the very tragic and sudden death of my colleague, Deborah Street (Beryl Breda in SL), in March this year. Deborah was a statistician who taught on a range on Master's and U/G programmes and a great SL enthusiast. There isn't anyone else who has so far stepped up to take the banner, but the Faculty is still reeling from her loss and I guess it will be some time before they get round to thinking about SL. If and when we do go ahead with maths and stats projects, I'll report it on this blog.

Hope you enjoy the tour and please do stay in touch. Happy to meet up inworld sometime if you'd like to chat further, and I'd be very interested to hear about your experiences in the OU. We presented at Relive 08 last November and thoroughly enjoyed it :-)

I am a psychology lecturer at the Open University, and also teach statistics. I am cvery interested in anything you do to teach statstics in SL, especially visualisation, and the use of a whiteboard. I am Martin Pattle in SL, and I founded the Open University UK group in SL.
